Which skincare ingredients are out of bounds?

My skin changed beyond all recognition in the second month, and it continued to evolve – or devolve really, since none of the changes were good ones – until around 2 weeks after I’d given birth. The only upside was the shopping trip I could make with my new wishlist of products, and the slightly healthier bank balance as drinking was now off the menu… But sadly the shop assistants were really vague about which products would be out of bounds for me, and advised I speak to my midwife before venturing back. So to save you the trouble, I asked dermatologist, Dr Ariel Haus – which skincare ingredients should I avoid? “You should avoid creams with Retinol – this compound disrupt fetal growth and development – Salicylic Acid, Urea, Soya– based creams, BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid), Tretinoin, Isotretinoin (Accutane), Benzoyl Peroxide, Sodium Sulfacetamide, Hydrocortisone (corticosteroid), and any other member of the Retinoid family. Also avoid D’arsenval acne treatments.” Skincare expert, Wendy Lewis added, “Certain antibiotics are also on that list – doxycycline and tetracycline, for example. Check with your doctor or dermatologist, don’t take chances.” The brands I found fitted with these parameters included REN Skincare, Emma Hardie and Avene. Watch this space for the products that are both effective and don’t contravene the doctor’s list…
